Future-Ready Control Room Technology for Sustainable Energy Supply

Stadtwerke Mühlacker
Depiction of a smart city

With its modernized network control center, Stadtwerke Mühlacker is making an important contribution to a decentralized, sustainable, and secure energy supply for the region. As a municipal utility company, it supplies a total of 36,559 households and 845 industrial sites with electricity, gas, water, heating, and internet services. As part of the modernization project, the network control center was designed to become more efficient, comfortable, and flexible. At the same time, the technical infrastructure needed to be prepared for future requirements.

The Challenge

Modernizing the network control center and efficiently managing the systems required to ensure a reliable supply called for a flexible, reliable, and future-ready technical solution.

The computer systems needed to be moved out of the control room while remaining accessible in real time from multiple workstations. At the same time, the project required an optimized cabling infrastructure, more ergonomic workstations, and improved collaboration when monitoring supply processes.

The Solution

For the network control center, an optimized cabling infrastructure was implemented and the computer systems were relocated to a protected area. KVM modules make these systems available at the operator workstations in the control room.

The relocated equipment includes several office PCs, a remote-control PC for the control center, and a ripple control system. These systems were connected to a compact matrix via KVM computer modules.

The matrix solution allows tasks to be handled flexibly from any of the configured workstations. Employees can access the required computers in real time from different workstations and switch between systems via an on-screen display or configured keyboard shortcuts.

In addition, a multiviewing solution with a central video wall improves collaboration and process monitoring within the control room.

Additional functions support day-to-day operations. With Push-Get, images and information can be shared or retrieved flexibly between different displays within the control room. The Autoscan function allows remote-control systems for electricity, water, and gas to be displayed automatically on the central video wall at individually configurable intervals.
