And KVM feels right

VisionXS 2.0

Latest extender generation for dedicated transmission over Cat or fiber.

VisionXS 2.0 is the current generation of matrix-compatible KVM extenders for dedicated transmission — over a CAT or fibre line of its own, independently of your IT. Compared with the previous generation it brings a new housing concept with improved cooling, a more robust surface finish and simpler mounting. Which of the three series you need is determined by your computers' video signal; which variant you need comes down to what should travel over the transmission links: several monitors, redundancy, or fast USB. It is all covered under "VisionXS 2.0 in detail".

VisionXS 2.0 in detail

The family comes in three series that differ in their video signal. Reach, housing concept, power supply and all security and operating functions are the same across the family. Differences arise in video channels, form factors and available module types.

The three series
  • VisionXS-DP-HR 2.0 — DisplayPort 1.1, up to 300 MPixel/s, for example 2560 × 1600 at 60 Hz or 4096 × 2160 at 30 Hz. The most varied series: computer and console modules, dual-head and multi-channel variants, and the only one with the Hex housing.
  • VisionXS-DP-UHR 2.0 — DisplayPort 1.2, up to 600 MPixel/s, for example 4096 × 2160 at 60 Hz or 5120 × 2160 at 50 Hz. Computer and console modules, multi-channel variants, all in the desktop housing.
  • VisionXS-DVI-I 2.0 — DVI-I for digital and analogue signals, up to 165 MPixel/s, for example 1920 × 1200 at 60 Hz. This series comprises computer modules only: they feed in DVI and VGA sources, while output runs through a console module from another series, such as DP-HR. DVI carries no embedded audio — audio runs in analogue form.

Through mix & match, all three series operate on the same system, including alongside other signal types.

What travels over the transmission link

Every extender has one or two transmission links. Four expansion options use them differently — and that is what determines the variant:

  • Single-channel video — one monitor over one link. The standard case.
  • DualHead (DH) — two video signals over one link, each including embedded audio. Currently available in the DP-HR series.
  • MultiChannel (MC2/MC4) — two or four video signals over two or four links of their own. The choice for multi-monitor workplaces at full resolution per screen, available in all three series.
  • Redundancy (2C/2F) — the same connection over two links. If one fails, the workplace keeps running.

Because all four compete for the same links, multi-channel, redundancy and the U2 variant cannot be combined with one another. Settle early which takes priority: several monitors, failover, or fast USB.

Distance

Between computer and console module, the family transmits up to 140 m over CAT, up to 400 m over multimode fibre and up to 5,000 m over singlemode fibre. Greater distances are achievable by exchanging the SFP transceivers. CAT operates at 1 Gbit/s, fibre at 2.5 Gbit/s. On fibre connections both modules are galvanically isolated, which improves immunity to electromagnetic interference; the required SFP transceivers are included.

The link is yours alone: it is decoupled from your network infrastructure and entirely predictable in its behaviour.

USB and peripherals
  • GenericUSB passes through HID devices, smart cards and mass storage.
  • U variants transmit transparent USB 2.0 over the KVM link — all USB classes, at full speed and 16 Mbit/s.
  • U2 variants use a transmission link of their own for USB 2.0 and reach high speed at 480 Mbit/s. The trade-off: they operate strictly as a point-to-point link, are not matrix-compatible, and rule out a redundant link.

Analogue audio is always integrated and bidirectional via adapter. RS232 is standard on the DT variants. On the input side, a USB Type-C connector and a dedicated USB K/M interface allow keyboard and mouse signals to be physically separated from the rest of the USB data stream.

On the monitor side, the extender manages EDID data flexibly — either from the workplace monitor or as a predefined profile from the computer module. Monitor parameters such as brightness can be controlled via DDC/CI.

Housings, mounting and cooling
  • Compact housing (115 × 32 × 222 mm) — for DP-HR and DVI-I; requires an external power supply. Device carriers hold up to twelve modules in 3 RU, or three in 1 RU.
  • Desktop housing DT (½ 19″, 215 × 44 × 222 mm) — for all three series, with internal power supply and RS232. Six devices fit side by side in 3 RU.
  • MultiChannel desktop housing (19″, 441 × 44 × 222 mm) — for the MC variants; one rack unit at full width, with a matching rack-mount set.
  • Hex housing (2 RU, 19″, 441 × 88 × 222 mm) — DP-HR series only: six fully independent console modules in a single device with shared redundant internal power. The densest form factor in the family.

All housings are powder-coated sheet steel in RAL 9006 with IP20 protection. Operating temperature 5 °C to 45 °C, or up to 35 °C for under-desk and rack mounting.

Fanless at the workplace: the DP-HR console module in its single-head variant is passively cooled and therefore silent — the right choice where the workplace needs to stay quiet. All other variants use active cooling.

Power supply

Modules in the desktop and multi-channel housings run from an internal power supply; redundant power can be added via an external supply. The compact modules require an external supply.

External power runs over USB Type-C with Power Delivery, with 65 W or 100 W power packs. For central installations, the MultiPower-12-TypeC supplies up to twelve devices redundantly, with network-based control and monitoring and automatic load distribution.

Operational reliability
  • Freeze function: if the video signal is lost, the last received image stays visible — frozen, with a coloured frame marker and an on-screen timer. Developed for air traffic control and comparably safety-critical applications.
  • Permanent emulation of keyboard, mouse and monitor keeps system states stable through restarts and switching operations.
  • Trusted computing platform: bootloader, operating system and firmware are cryptographically secured, and a TPM protects configuration data. Console modules store no login credentials.
  • Access management: role-based rights per resource, configurable password policies, two-factor authentication as standard, integration with Active Directory, LDAP or Radius.
  • Monitoring: events via syslog, SNMP and the web interface, auto-backup of the configuration, and an ident LED for locating a device on site.
  • Physical separation: there is no direct access between workplace and computer, and access requires no local software installation.
Extender operation, local console and matrix

The modules work both as an extender between one computer and one workplace and as end devices in a dedicated matrix system.

  • Local console: the LC variants provide full local access at the computer module, including all video channels. Local and remote workplaces can operate concurrently; input at one side locks the other, and the lock time is configurable. A key combination activates exclusive mode.
  • Matrix operation: VisionXS 2.0 integrates into ControlCenter-Compact and ControlCenter-Digital and is compatible with the existing MTX-CON/CPU, Vision and VisionXS families. Exception: the U2 variants remain point-to-point links.
  • Configuration: through Config Panel 21, a Java-free HTML5 web interface, with monitoring and firmware updates during operation. Operation is also available through the OSD and freely definable key combinations.
FAQ - Frequently asked questions
  • What is different about 2.0?
The housing and cooling, the mounting, the surface finish, power and configuration over USB Type-C, and the separated USB input side. Functionally, the family remains compatible with MTX-CON/CPU, Vision and VisionXS.
  • DualHead or MultiChannel?
DualHead carries two video signals over one link and is the compact solution for two monitors. MultiChannel uses a link per video signal and is the choice where two or four monitors need to run at full resolution.
  • Can I combine multi-channel video and redundancy?
No. Both occupy the additional transmission links. The U2 variant likewise rules out a redundant link.
  • Can I run DVI sources with a DisplayPort workplace?
Yes — and with DVI-I that is the intended route: the series offers computer modules only.
  • Are there fanless modules?
Yes — the DP-HR console module in its single-head variant.
