With Sky Sport HQ in Unterföhring near Munich, Sky Deutschland operates one of Europe’s most advanced sports broadcast and production centers.
The facility produces a wide range of live programming covering the Bundesliga, 2. Bundesliga, DFB-Pokal, Europa League, and Champions League, while also supporting Sky’s social media channels.
Sky Sport HQ spans a total of 4,600 square meters, including 1,700 square meters dedicated to four high-tech live studios. The broadcast center includes 41 rooms in total, with approximately 50 kilometers of cabling installed to connect the technical infrastructure.
According to Sky, the facility can produce and broadcast up to twelve programs simultaneously over the course of a single weekend. In addition to five sports channels broadcasting around the clock, ten additional channels can be brought online as needed.

The high volume of simultaneous live productions places significant demands on the availability, reliability, and performance of the technical infrastructure. At the same time, the goal was to streamline workflows and improve collaboration across the individual production teams.
To achieve this, as much of the computer infrastructure as possible needed to be moved out of the studios, control rooms, and post-production areas and centralized in dedicated server rooms. At the same time, production teams had to be able to access the systems they needed reliably and without interruption at all times.
G&D’s KVM systems make it possible to centralize the computer infrastructure in dedicated server rooms and serve as the backbone of the IT environment. Around 100 high-performance computers are housed centrally in the server room and made available to users at their respective workstations via KVM.
These systems include ingest and video servers, studio and broadcast automation systems, graphics systems, teleprompters, camera robotics, as well as general-purpose configuration servers and clients. This setup made it possible to create largely computer-free Video Control Rooms, Program Control Rooms, ingest and playout areas, graphics departments, and studios.
To ensure high system availability, two fully mirrored, redundant matrix switch clusters, each built around a ControlCenter-Digital 288, were deployed. If switching through one matrix is unavailable in the event of a fault, the system automatically switches to the second matrix. This allows production teams to continue working as usual even if a system failure occurs.
Where computers still need to remain locally available, KVM switches such as the DP-MUX2 allow users to switch between multiple systems. TradeSwitches also enable producers to control several computers using a single keyboard and mouse.
Another key part of the solution is the integration of the ControlCenter-Digital KVM matrix into LAWO’s VSM broadcast control and monitoring system. Using the IP-Control API, the VSM controller communicates directly with the KVM matrix and can execute switching commands. This makes it possible, for example, to switch multiple program configurations at the same time or transfer setups between different control rooms.
Qvest Media was responsible for technical planning and system integration. The integrator developed the concept for the fully redundant setup of the production and operator computers and their relocation from studios, control rooms, and post-production areas.
Qvest Media also handled the audiovisual systems for the two large live studios, the associated control rooms, editing suites, ten dedicated voice-over booths, and 16 additional voice-over positions.

With its own production and broadcast center, Sky Deutschland gained maximum flexibility and greater capacity for future in-house productions. At the same time, individual workflows were improved, making day-to-day production easier for the teams involved.
By centralizing the computer infrastructure, production areas can operate largely without local computers. The fully redundant KVM infrastructure ensures high availability, while integration with the VSM system simplifies complex switching workflows and enables centralized control.
