What is a KVM matrix system?

A KVM matrix system connects many computers to many workplaces. Every workplace can access every computer – simultaneously, independently of one another and across sites.

A matrix system consists of three module types: the central module, which handles the switching, the computer modules at the computers, and the console modules at the workplaces. Computer and console modules are the same modules that also work as extenders – in a matrix system they are not paired directly but switched through the central module.

For one computer at a remote workplace, a KVM extender is sufficient; for several computers at one workplace, a KVM switch. As soon as several workplaces need simultaneous access to the same computers, the matrix system is the answer.

System architecture

The starting point for any selection is the architecture of the system:

Dedicated uses its own central module as matrix hardware. Computer and console modules connect to it directly over CAT or fiber cabling. The port count of the central module determines the system size.

KVM-over-IP handles the switching logic over ordinary network switches. No dedicated matrix hardware is required, and the system scales by licence – with any number of IP-CPUs and IP-CONs.

System size

In dedicated systems, the port count sets the size. Thanks to Dynamic Port technology, every port can be used flexibly as an input or an output – so the split between computers and workplaces is yours to choose and can be changed later.

ControlCenter-Compact – 8 to 176 ports over CAT, 16 to 48 over fiber, 32 to 112 in mixed configurations

For larger installations, several matrix systems can be networked together.

With KVM-over-IP, that limit does not apply. System size follows the licence and your existing network infrastructure.

ControlCenter-IP-Max – up to 2,500 end devices

Modules and video signals

Computer and console modules are available for the most common video signals across every matrix system. All modules with bluedec™ compression can be combined freely – even across different video signal types. Standardised building blocks give you exactly the configuration your infrastructure calls for.

The same modules also work as extenders. An existing extender setup can therefore be expanded into a matrix system later by adding a central module, without replacing the end devices.

Extensions

RemoteAccess adds two access paths to the matrix system: the RemoteAccess-CPU integrates virtual machines so they can be accessed like physical computers. The RemoteAccess-GATE provides access to your KVM systems across sites.

Central modules and transmission paths with redundancy are available for mission-critical environments.
