Win in the Morning: KVM Strikes the Right Tone at Qmusic

Flexible, redundant KVM technology from G&D supports efficient radio production at Qmusic Netherlands

For many listeners, switching on the radio in the morning is part of a successful start to the day. For Qmusic Netherlands, one of the leading radio stations in the Netherlands, the daily Morning Show plays a key role in winning audiences early and encouraging them to tune in again later in the day.
As part of its relocation to a new building in Amsterdam, Qmusic Netherlands used the opportunity to comprehensively modernize its technical infrastructure. The goal was to create a reliable, user-friendly and scalable KVM environment that would support smooth collaboration between producers and DJs across four new studios while keeping equipment in the studio to a minimum to protect acoustics.

The Challenge

With the move to the new building, Qmusic Netherlands needed to rethink its existing KVM setup. The previous system no longer met expectations in terms of reliability and modernity.

The new infrastructure had to support seamless collaboration between producers and DJs, ensure uninterrupted access at all times and enable a redundant setup for live broadcast operations. At the same time, the number of devices in the studio needed to remain low so that the studio acoustics would not be compromised.

Following personal recommendations from colleagues in the radio industry, Qmusic Netherlands tested demo equipment from G&D. The test setup convinced the team.

The Solution – KVM Technology from G&D

G&D implemented a compact, redundant KVM matrix system designed to provide flexible access to multiple computer sources from different working positions.

At the core of the installation are two redundant ControlCenter-Compact systems. They allow several computers to be controlled from different working positions and make it possible to relocate technology from the radio studio to the server room. This helps keep the studio environment clear and supports the protection of acoustics.

The Matrix-Grid™ function was activated during installation, enabling extended access to additional computer sources and workplaces connected to one of the two matrix systems. This gives users the flexibility to carry out tasks from any configured workplace.

The KVM technology used creates a seamless workflow between producers and DJs. Producers support the DJs in the background, while the DJs use the systems directly to control broadcasts. The result is coordinated, uninterrupted operation behind the scenes and a professional on-air performance.

For maximum availability, the infrastructure uses two redundant matrix systems together with the MatrixGuard function. Even in the event of a sudden system failure, operations can continue seamlessly – a critical requirement in live broadcast environments where downtime is not an option.

Technical Highlights

  • Redundant KVM matrix infrastructure with two ControlCenter-Compact systems

  • Technology relocated from the radio studios to the server room
  • Matrix-Grid function for extended access to additional computer sources and working positions
  • MatrixGuard function for seamless operation in the event of a system failure

  • Shared access to required systems and programs from configured workplaces

The Result

The new KVM infrastructure has made daily operations at Qmusic Netherlands faster, more flexible and more reliable. Employees can access the systems they need for their daily tasks without any loss of time.

In the studios, several monitors at the workplaces enable DJs to work flexibly and keep all relevant information at hand. Employees in one studio can see how far colleagues in another studio have progressed with a broadcast, improving the production flow and simplifying collaboration between teams.

Radio producers can exchange data in real time and access the programs they need without leaving their desks. This allows DJs to focus fully on creating their programs, while content details are coordinated efficiently in the background.
