Syslog - collecting log messages centrally

How it works

The syslog protocol transmits log messages from devices to a syslog server, which consolidates the messages of many devices on a network. Transmission uses UDP or TCP, typically on port 514.

Each message is assigned one of eight severity levels defined by the syslog standard: 0 emergency, 1 alert, 2 critical, 3 error, 4 warning, 5 notice, 6 informational, 7 debug. A configurable log level determines the severity from which messages are recorded; the selected level and all lower ones are transmitted.

Why it matters

Central logging makes troubleshooting across device boundaries easier and provides the basis for audit requirements, such as documenting login events and configuration changes.

2-Factor authentication
Two-factor authentication adds a second, possession-based factor to the password prompt, in the form of a time-limited one-time password (TOTP). Learn more >>
bluedec™
bluedec™ is G&D's multi-stage, lossless compression method. It transmits video data pixel-perfectly and without perceptible latency – even across standard IP networks. Learn more >>
CrossDisplay-Switching
CrossDisplay-Switching switches keyboard and mouse between the computers of a multi-monitor workplace by mouse movement alone. It is part of the TradeSwitch-Function. Learn more >>
DirectRedundancyShield
The DirectRedundancyShield protects a KVM-over-IP matrix system with a second central module. The switch to the backup system happens without interrupting the image transmission. Learn more >>
FreeSeating
FreeSeating automatically restores a user's personal working environment at any workplace. A single login applies to all console modules at that workplace. The function is part of the TradeSwitch-Function. Learn more >>
Freeze-Function
The Freeze-Function holds the last image on screen when the video signal is lost and marks this state on the monitor. Learn more >>
IP-Control-API
The IP-Control-API enables text-based XML control of a KVM matrix system over the network — sending switching commands and retrieving switching states, independently of any console module. Learn more >>
KVM Matrix-Grid™
The Matrix-Grid combines several digital KVM matrix switches into a group that behaves like one large matrix system for the user. Learn more >>
MatrixGuard
The MatrixGuard function ensures that if the database leader fails, another matrix switch automatically takes over the role and the system restarts without manual intervention. Learn more >>
Push-Get function
The Push-Get-Function transfers the switch state of one console module to another – pushing it there or getting it from there. A source can be handed over within the team without the recipient having to switch. Learn more >>
Scenario switching
Scenario switching stores the switch state of one workplace, several workplaces or the entire system and restores it on demand. Learn more >>
SecureCert
SecureCert is a licensed feature for G&D KVM-over-IP systems that provides certified security functions for use in regulated environments. Learn more >>
SNMP
SNMP (Simple Network Management Protocol) is used to monitor devices across a network. An agent on the device supplies status data to a central management system and reports serious events on its own initiative. Learn more >>
Syslog
Syslog (System Logging Protocol) is a proven protocol for transmitting log data within a network. It supports the centralized management of event logs generated by various network devices such as servers, firewalls and routers. Learn more >>
TradeSwitch function
The TradeSwitch-Function combines several console modules into a group operated with one keyboard and mouse. CrossDisplay-Switching and FreeSeating are part of the function. Learn more >>
