Two-factor authentication (2FA, marketed as the 2-Factor-Authentication feature) supplements the standard login with username and password with a second factor the user must possess. An intercepted or guessed password alone is therefore no longer sufficient for system access.

How it works

The second factor is a Time-Based One-Time Password (TOTP) — a password valid only for a short period and only once. It is generated by an authenticator app or a hardware token. Once activated, the login prompts for this one-time password in addition to username and password.

2FA is first enabled on the device and then activated per user account.

Authentication source

The second factor can be verified either by the authentication server built into the device or by an external directory service. The internal server requires no additional infrastructure, which makes it suitable for isolated installations as well.

Points to note

With 2FA active, the fallback mechanism to local user management is not available. If an external directory service is used, its availability needs to be planned accordingly.
