MatrixGuard function – automatic database leader failover

In a group of several matrix switches, one device holds the system database as the database leader, while the others act as followers. The MatrixGuard function reassigns this role automatically if a failure occurs, so that operation continues without manual intervention.

How it works

If the database leader fails or becomes inaccessible, another matrix switch in the group takes over its role. The transition is performed automatically according to predefined rules. The remaining participants connect to the new leader and the system resumes operation on its own.

On restart, the "restore connections" option brings back the switching states that were last in place, so that operation can resume quickly.

Return of the original leader

If the original database leader comes back online, ongoing operation is not disrupted. If another participant has taken over the leader role in the meantime, the original leader automatically switches to follower mode. Changes made to the database in the meantime — renaming a computer module, for example — are therefore preserved.

Requirements by system type

Dedicated matrix systems: the Matrix-Grid function is also required. Full operation of the remaining components is ensured, except for the endpoints connected to the unavailable matrix.

KVM-over-IP matrix systems: each ControlCenter-IP must be able to manage the connected end devices and therefore requires the corresponding number of licenses. Full operation of the remaining components is ensured.

Distinction from the DirectRedundancyShield

Both features protect operation against faults, but at different levels. The MatrixGuard function governs the handover of the database leader role; the system restarts and restores the switching states. The DirectRedundancyShield maintains permanent connections to two central modules and switches over without interrupting the image transmission. The two features cannot be combined.
